2. Waiver: Waiving of Retirement Annuity
You may return to full-time employment in a KTRS position by waiving your retirement. In this program, you stop receiving your retirement check and will make contributions to the retirement account from which you retired. At the time you elect to retire for a second time, the service credit earned (if equivalent to at least one year) and the salaries earned (if higher than the original salaries) will be used to recalculate your retirement benefit. If the time employed in this program is less than one year of service credit, than the retirement contributions paid will be refunded and your retirement check will be the same as before. You can reduce or remove discounts due to age or years of service by electing this program.

3. 100-Day / 12 Semester Hours Program
Retired members may return to teaching in a post secondary position not to exceed twelve (12) teaching hours in any one fiscal year. Retired members may return to a non-teaching or administrative post secondary position for a period not to exceed one hundred (100) days in any one fiscal year. Any period of employment in excess of 3.5 hours in a given day is considered a full day. Any period of employment equal to or less than 3.5 hours in a given day is considered a half day. No salary limits apply unless you are teaching and coaching (academic or athletic). Your salary limit in this situation is 54% of the salary from which you retired and must be obtained from KTRS prior to your employment.

No second retirement account is started and you will continue receiving your retirement check.

4. Optional Retirement Program
You may return to full-time employment with a university or community college and elect a retirement program other than KTRS. If you have retired from a university or community college, than there must be a complete six-month break in service prior to being employed.

5. Employment in a Non-KTRS Position
Retired members who wish to return to employment with KTRS employers in positions that do not qualify for KTRS membership may do so. Prior to the retiree’s employment in a “non-KTRS” position, the employer must submit a Form 30-E, Request for Exemption from KTRS Employment Limitations. KTRS will notify the employer and the retired member whether the KTRS return to work provisions apply, or whether the retiree is exempt from the application of these provisions. Failure by the employer to submit the Form 30-E and obtain a written determination by KTRS will cause the retiree to be in violation of the return to work provisions.
